Wearing blue in April is a great opportunity to start a dialog with your kids about autism and how they can be more compassionate and inclusive toward others.

Since Autism Speaks started their "Light it up Blue" campaign several years ago, my family tries to do something special every year in recognition of World Autism Awareness Day and April, World Autism Month. A few years ago, my daughter asked me to come in and talk to her class about autism and our family. Now, she takes it upon herself to educate her classmates—she wears blue to school and shares stories with her friends and teachers about her brother, his struggles and gifts, and families like ours. We are so proud she has taken on the cause of raising awareness and teaching compassion for all kinds of kids!
